Challenging Ourselves Pegasus employees go on a summer outdoor training trip

(June 17 th , 2006) Many of Pegasus' employees participated in team building activities in Huairou over the weekend. The employees both departed and returned with great enthusiasm.

The purpose of the training was to integrate new-comers into Pegasus and to strengthen the relationships amongst all the employees. As the company grows, Pegasus seeks to maintain and nurture their unique culture through various events and activities.

Pegasus Communications Ltd began as a small company with only seven or eight employees. In four years it has grown into a well-known communications company consistently satisfying their famous clients. In recent years, Pegasus has significantly expanded. There are now a total of 90 employees, a new office in Beijing that measures about 1000 square meters and they have recently secured some new significant clients. This expansion allows for the four branches under Pegasus to unite in one office promoting better cooperation and communication.

The outdoor training session began Saturday night with a barbeque and bonfire accompanied by music, games, videos and speeches. On Sunday morning began the formal ground training designed and led by the instructional leaders. Activities included trust falls, obstacle courses and high platform walks. Each individual had his/her own role but cooperation was the key to successfully completing any activity. The groups took advantage of individual strengths while realizing the importance of everyone's participation. Therefore, the role of the leader was essential in encouraging cooperation and communication within their group. Just as in company management, success required a plan and a good execution of that plan. At the beginning, groups lacked organization however as the activities progressed leaders cooperated with their groups to create competent plans and executions. At the completion of each event, individuals shared personal feelings about their experience and what they had learned from working as a team.

Although it was only a short trip, Pegasus employees learned about themselves as well as group dynamics. They discovered that a successful group requires trust, cooperation and closeness. Hopefully the Pegasus employees will use the skills they developed in outdoor training for their work everyday indoors. Then the trip will truly be a success.

(Outdoor training was developed after World War II in Britain . It was inspired by a story of a British ship that was destroyed by the Germans, killing many sailors onboard. However, the people who did survive relied not on their physical strength, but on their will power. After hearing of this story of survival, a man named Hans along with others started a school aimed at training young sailors how to survive in desperate situations. After WWII, the survival training became popular because people realized the training also helped them build mental strength. Now, this outdoor training has attracted not only sailors but army personnel, business men and women and students. This training is typically held in the suburbs or country. The purpose of the training has shifted away from physical survival and into the development of mental capabilities, character building and team management.)
